Classroom Random Picker Guide
How to call on students fairly, handle absences, build presentation orders, and keep sound, motion and student data under control.
Why random calling is worth doing
Left to instinct, most of us call on the same students. The confident hands go up, the quiet ones get missed, and after a few weeks the pattern is established for everyone in the room. Random calling breaks that, and it does something else too: because students cannot predict who is next, more of them prepare an answer.
It also changes the social dynamic of being called on. When the selection is visibly random, being picked is not a judgement about you — which lowers the stakes considerably for anxious students.
Use no-repeat rounds, not plain random
Plain random selection is fair per draw and unfair over a lesson: in a class of thirty, some students will be called three times before others are called once. That is just how independent draws behave, and students notice.
No-repeat mode fixes it. Each student is called exactly once before anyone is called twice, which produces a random order rather than random draws. Over a lesson everyone gets a turn, and the order is still unpredictable.
Turn off the auto-reset if you want to see clearly when a round has finished; leave it on if you want the tool to keep going without intervention.
Handle absences without editing the list
Deleting an absent student from the list means retyping them tomorrow, and it is the reason most teachers abandon these tools after a week. Untick them in the entry options instead: they stay in the list, they are excluded from every draw, and one click brings them back.
The same mechanism works for a student who has just presented, someone working with a support teacher, or anyone you want to skip for the day.
Presentation orders in one press
When everyone has to present, do not draw one at a time — generate the whole order at once. It takes a single press, students can see their position and prepare, and you avoid the drawn-out tension of repeated draws.
A Fisher-Yates shuffle makes every possible order equally likely, so the unpopular slots are allocated fairly. Print the order or project it so nobody has to ask where they are.
Keep sound and motion minimal
Sound is off by default on this site and should usually stay that way in a classroom: a chime thirty times a lesson stops being fun quickly. If you want audio feedback, keep it for special occasions.
Motion matters more than it might seem. Some students find spinning animations genuinely uncomfortable, and browsers expose a “reduce motion” system setting that this site respects automatically. You can also set Animation to “No animation” for an instant result, which is faster anyway when you are calling twenty students in a lesson.
The celebration effect can be turned off entirely in Options, and is skipped automatically when reduced motion is requested.
Protect student data
The safest class list is the smallest one that works. First names, or first names with a single initial where two students share one, is enough for a picker. There is no reason to enter student ID numbers, dates of birth, contact details, addresses, or notes about individual students, and you should not.
This site does not upload your list — the draw runs in your browser and nothing is transmitted. Your list disappears when you close the tab unless you explicitly save it, and a saved list stays in that browser on that device. On a shared staffroom or classroom computer, do not save class lists at all.
Check your school or district policy before entering student information into any web tool, including this one. The technical protections here are real, but they do not override an institutional rule.
Practical routines that work
Project the picker in full-screen mode so the class can see the draw happening. Transparency is most of the benefit.
Use the pick counts to check your own assumptions at the end of a lesson — they often show that a class felt lopsided when it was not, or vice versa.
